FEELING SPECIAL

Having had the privilege of several stimulating conversations on air with various people regarding relationships , it is clear there is no "one size fits all" approach as to the ideal gesture to show affection to another. Some gestures could be simple with deep meanings, others may not be intended as anything major yet it transmits a strong message of respect and affection to the recipient.

In a society like Nigeria where I live especially in an urban city like Abuja, what an individual may find manly/ womanly in an attractive manner may yet still be a major turn off to another down the road. It is obvious our diverse cultures, upbringing, or constant personal growth engagements at different phases of our lives play a major role in how we view matters of the heart. A huge influence from other foreign cultures into what we deem 'romantic' or not is always interesting to hear as I listen to people talk about what makes them tick.

So here is a compilation of several gestures from a combination of what I gathered of how people express themselves ( consciously /unconsciously) to someone they care about which in turn translates to the other party feeling 'special’.

These gestures have been recorded from the recipient’s point of view which isn’t gender biased.

Feeling Special…

  • When they get a surprise visit specifically at the office.
  • When they are taken out for lunch just to spend a little time together before the hassle of the day continues.
  • When words like ' I like it when you are with me even when I am extremely busy' are uttered.
  • When they get genuinely apologised to because a call was picked or an email/sms was responded to in their presence as a result of its urgent nature yet sensitive enough to notice the encroachment into their time/ space.
  • When they receive a show of excitement/praise on any of their projects yet with a level of appropriate caution.
  • When they are offered to share a quick snack because they look hungry
  • When their chair is fondly dragged to move closer for a quick hug
  • When they get an impromptu song being sung to them or to their hearing irrespective of how badly the song was done just to make them smile
  • Getting introduced fondly to people they meet when they go for a surprise visit.
  • When they are made to dance randomly (he has her standing on his feet)
  • When their call is picked and another is placed on hold just to hear if it was an emergency, and if not they are promised to be called back ASAP... they get a call back and apologised to for having let them go earlier.
  • When they get told of future travels by their partner.
  • When their name is called out loud from afar to get their attention.
